Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is an injectable treatment offered at Serene Skin and Wellness Medspa by which a person’s own blood is used. Platelets are vital in the process of tissue healing, and the growth of new cells. PRP thereby promotes collagen production, regenerates the skin tissue, and essentially re-energizes your cells into rejuvenating themselves. The release of growth factors amplifies the healing process. PRP softens fine lines and wrinkles, tightens the skin, and improves skin tone and texture.
At Serene Skin and Wellness Medspa, the treatment of PRP involves a fraction of blood, collected or ‘drawn up’ from the individual patient into a syringe. The collected blood is then spun down in a special centrifuge to separate its components. The platelet rich plasma is then reinjected, and/or micro-needled back into the skin.
Typically, a PRP treatment takes between an hour or two to complete. This depends on if the PRP is administered through injections only, and/or micro-needled into the skin. This timeframe includes an additional 30 minutes for the blood to be drawn and spun in the centrifuge, and topical numbing to be applied.
Some mild discomfort may be felt while the PRP is being reinjected. The sensation typically felt is a burning or tingling sensation. This sensation only lasts a few minutes after the PRP is injected. At Serene Skin and Wellness Medspa, we ensure our patients are comfortable throughout the entire PRP treatment and apply topical numbing cream and ice to aid any discomfort.
Generally, patients notice tightening and a more even tone to their skin in a week or two after PRP injections . These results continue to build for up to 6 months after treatment.
Results from PRP injections can be seen for many years after treatment; however, these results vary due to the individual’s natural variation in quality of Platelet Rich Plasma, as well as their lifestyle. While we cannot stop the aging process, we can slow it down. Results from PRP injections can be extended with proper at-home skincare maintenance recommended by our team.
Technically, PRP can be used to treat areas of the body. For cosmetic purposes PRP is most popularly used to treat the face and neck.
There is no downtime associated with PRP injections ; however, after your treatment, your skin may be red. This is normal and to be expected. Redness usually lasts from one to 24 hours. You may also have a little swelling in some areas. Due to this, some patients like to be treated towards the end of the week, so they have the weekend to recover. Healing time varies from patient to patient. Healing may take longer if PRP injections are paired with micro-needling.
Results can be seen after one treatment, but the exact amount of treatments needed varies from patient to patient. Generally, 2‐3 treatments are advised, but more may be indicated for some individuals.
PRP used for aesthetic purposes is safe for most individuals. There are very few contraindications with PRP injections. The most common side effects associated with PRP injections are mild to moderate swelling and redness.
During your consultation at Serene Skin and Wellness Medspa, an assessment will be made to ensure you are the right candidate for PRP injections. Patients with certain health conditions are not a candidate for PRP injections. Patients who are pregnant are not candidates for PRP injections.
At Serene Skin and Wellness Medspa, we recommend treating no sooner than 3-4 weeks before a special event or upcoming vacation to allow time for adequate healing and swelling to subside. If you have a history of cold sores, consider beginning prophylactic treatment with Valtrex or similar no later than the day of treatment, as advised by our team at Serene Skin and Wellness Medspa. Discontinue use of anti-inflammatory drugs, both steroidal and non-steroidal (e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen, Medrol, prednisone, Advil), at least 3 days to 1 week before your treatment at Serene Skin and Wellness Medspa. With PRP, we want inflammation; this is one of the mechanisms of how PRP does its work. If you are or have been on steroids within 2 weeks of treatment, we cannot treat you at Serene Skin and Wellness Medspa. Consult your physician for approval to discontinue the use of steroids and receive treatment. Discontinue use of any other blood-thinning agents such as Vitamin E, Vitamin A, Gingko Biloba, Garlic, Flax Oil, Cod Liver Oil, Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s and DHA’s), etc., at least 3 days to 1 week before and after treatment at Serene Skin and Wellness Medspa to minimize bruising and bleeding. At Serene Skin and Wellness Medspa, we recommend avoiding alcohol, caffeine, Niacin supplements, spicy foods, and cigarettes 3 days before and after your treatment. (All of these may increase risk of bruising)
Do NOT touch, press, rub, or manipulate the treated area(s) for at least 8 hours after your treatment at Serene Skin and Wellness Medspa. It is normal to experience bruising, redness, itching, soreness, and swelling lasting up to 10 days following your procedure. AVOID Aspirin, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Aleve (all non-steroidal and steroidal anti-inflammatory agents). Remember, at Serene Skin and Wellness Medspa, we are creating inflammation to initiate the rebuilding and repair process. If you experience discomfort or pain, you may take Tylenol or other Acetaminophen products, as recommended by our team. You may apply ice as needed for comfort , but keep in mind this also limits the necessary inflammatory process. Do not use any lotions, creams, or makeup for at least 6 hours after your treatment. AVOID vigorous exercise, sun, and heat exposure for at least 48 hours after your treatment . Use an SPF 30 or higher. AVOID alcohol, caffeine, and cigarettes for 48 hours before and after your treatment. Smoking impairs healing times, therefore increases chances of complications and reduces effectiveness of treatment. Maintain a healthy diet and drink at least 64 oz. of water the day of the treatment, as advised by our team at Serene Skin and Wellness Medspa.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) hair treatment is a non-invasive therapy designed for hair loss and restoration. It utilizes protein-rich cells extracted from the patient’s own blood. The process starts with drawing a standard blood sample, which is then spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma from red blood cells and other components. This concentrated plasma is injected into scalp areas experiencing thinning or loss, making it an excellent choice for conditions like androgenetic alopecia.
Platelet-rich plasma is a blood component packed with platelets that, when injected into hair follicles, can activate growth factors and promote noticeable improvements in hair density over several months.
Performed by skilled professionals, the procedure is straightforward and efficient. From blood draw to scalp injections, it typically lasts about 30 minutes.
The number of sessions varies based on the extent of hair loss, current hair condition, and desired outcomes. Generally, three initial treatments are recommended, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Following the third session, an evaluation determines if additional treatments are beneficial to maintain progress.
As a cosmetic procedure, PRP hair restoration is usually not covered by insurance. It’s advisable to check specific details with your provider.
Minimal downtime allows most patients to resume daily activities immediately. Your provider will guide you on post-treatment care, such as avoiding hair washing on the day of the procedure but resuming the next day. Additionally, refraining from exercise, smoking, and alcohol that day is often recommended.
Yes, it’s proven effective against various forms of hair loss, including androgenetic alopecia (affecting the crown and frontal areas) and alopecia areata (patchy loss across the scalp). It supports hair regrowth throughout the scalp.
Visible results often emerge between 5 to 7 months, though this can vary by the cause and severity of hair loss. Many notice increased thickness within a few months.
Results depend on individual response and the underlying cause of hair loss. Maintenance sessions may be suggested every 4 months to a year to sustain benefits.
Research indicates minimal risks, with the most common being temporary mild discomfort at injection sites. Since it uses the patient’s own blood, it’s generally safe but not recommended for those on blood thinners.
Injections are involved, but a numbing cream is applied beforehand to minimize sensation. Any discomfort is usually mild and short-lived.
